Heading to college is somewhat of a rite of passage these days, giving the opportunity to develop skills, build knowledge and make a foundation for life. However, it can be a great deal more than this alone, with many benefits far outstripping the world of academia exclusively.
The primary reason for seeking a college education remains to learn however. Unlike school of course, students are given the freedom to select courses for themselves; being able to tailor them as they see fit. Excellent preparation for a working life of course, but so much more than this alone.
Throughout school and in life in general, we all build up interests and hobbies and things which fascinate us. The opportunity that college brings allows these worlds to be explored a great deal more. Students can specialize in something; really get into it at a level that they never had the opportunity to before.
More importantly than this though, are the relationships which are developed. Friends are of course made through school, but at college existing friendships will be strengthened. New friendships with people from across the world will also be built. Here, stronger networks will be made, as an understanding of shared interests and thoughts combine.
It is also an opportunity to experience life without adults for the first time in a great many cases, and certainly for an ongoing time. Mindful of this, students are for the first time allowed to really grow as themselves, express their individuality and develop the personalities out of the glare of caring but possibly over zealous concern.
Just ask anyone who has had a college education, and they will extol the virtues of it. They will likely mention it was the best time of their life, where their eyes were really opened for the first time and the world made sense. Further, you ask those that did not attend, and there is a reasonable chance it remains one of their deepest regrets.
As much as it is an opportunity to explore new avenues and concentrate on those areas that are important in life, it is also a chance to see how best to add to life. With the host of initiatives that colleges run these days, including charitable drives and philanthropic activities, it is possible to see how much more can be given back to society.
Though the opportunity to head to college is somewhat of a right in modern day western world, it is not something that the world in general has. It is very much a privilege. This understanding is really brought home, and with the chance of taking gap years to help those in need, it is possible to seek areas where help is needed.
Adding such life experience is as important as any qualifications that are earned, and skills which are honed. The whole package therefore is something which is increasingly looked for by employers, and reflects well on the character of a person.
As greater numbers of people are going on to further education, employers can afford to be more selective in their recruitment drives. Character and knowledge building all at once, a college education is something which will prepare a student not just to achieve academically, but to achieve in life.
